Cloud Computing 101

What is Cloud?

The National Institute of Standards and Technology defines cloud computing as ‘a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g. networks, servers, storage, applications and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction’. In simpler terms, cloud is computing-as-a-service, where infrastructure, software, services, data and programs are stored and hosted offsite by a third party and then accessed via the internet.

There are a multitude of benefits for choosing cloud solutions over traditional on premise or local ones, including cost savings, scalability, elasticity, efficiency and security. There are several types of cloud as well as numerous cloud service offerings to meet any business need.

Why Cloud?

Time x Capacity graph

The primary reason organisations are choosing cloud computing is to reduce costs. Cloud solutions function on an OpEx (operational expense) rather than a CapEx (capital expenditure) model, which means that there is little to no upfront investment required and you only pay for what you need and use, much like a utility bill. Removing the need for purchasing, maintaining and refreshing expensive hardware, as well as the associated staffing costs adds up to significant savings and frees up your IT staff to focus on more strategic projects.

Another major benefit of leveraging cloud solutions is its scalability – being able to provision additional resources as you need them to meet increasing demands means that you will never lose business while you wait for resources to be provisioned, while the ability to turn off resources as demand declines means that you will never have to pay for unnecessary resources.

Mobility is a necessity in today’s global workforce and organisations that leverage cloud solutions enable their employees to access information and programs from anywhere, at any time and from any device, increasing workforce efficiency and productivity.

Security is one of the primary concerns that arises when speaking about the cloud, but it is actually one of the many benefits of cloud computing. Organisations can leverage the expert security policies, measures, processes and procedures of 3rd party hosts, who specialise in maintaining the highest level of security for their clients’ data.
